Pennsylvania Teen Allegedly Fatally Shoots Sleeping Mom and Brother, Tries to Blame Father

A 14-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday and charged with allegedly fatally shooting his mother and little brother while they slept, say Pennsylvania state police.

He allegedly then called 911 and tried to blame his father for the killings, allegedly saying, “Why didn’t he kill me? I need help,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS Pittsburgh.

Jacob Remaley of New Stanton, Pennsylvania, has been charged as an adult with two counts of criminal homicide and two counts of first-degree murder, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

His mother, Dana Remaley, 46, and his younger brother, Caleb Remaley, 8, were both shot once in the head, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Stephen Limani said at a news conference Thursday.

After his 911 call, Remaley allegedly confessed to police that after his father left for work, he retrieved an unloaded handgun from on top of the refrigerator, loaded it and shot his mother and brother in their bedrooms.

Before state troopers arrived at the scene, Remaley allegedly took the gun out of the house and was walking down the street with the weapon, Limani said.

But neighbor he encountered encouraged him to discard the gun, Limani said.

“That neighbor did a very good job in de-escalating the situation,” Limani said. “The last thing we want to do is approach a 14-year-old with a firearm.”

Authorities are still trying to determine a motive for the alleged killings, Limani said.

“It’s very difficult to have an answer for why,” Limani said. “We don’t specifically have an answer for why.”

“The only real conclusion that we could draw from some of our investigation was that he had some difference with his parents when it came to just not getting along with them well,” Limani said.

Remaley is awaiting arraignment, when he is expected to enter a plea. He is also expected to undergo a mental health evaluation, say authorities. It is unclear whether he has hired an attorney.
