AMERICAN rapper Mac Miller, who recently went through a bitter break up with Ariana Grande has died at the young age of 26.

Miller, whose real name is Malcolm James McCormack, has been very open about his substance abuse issues, died of an apparent overdose, law enforcement sources told TMZ.

He was reportedly found at his San Fernando Valley, California, home after a friend called 911.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to TMZ.

His family said in a statement that Miller died Friday but gave no further details.

“He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans,” the statement said.

Hours before his death, Miller posted an Instagram story where a vinyl record is seen playing part of the lyrics from one of his songs titled So it Goes.

The lyrics from the song are:

Well, everybody gather ‘round

I’m still standing, sit down

Woah-oh

And I know been out (and I know I been out)

...

So it goes, so it goes, so it goes

Da da da da, da da da

Da da da da, da da da

...

So it goes

Los Angeles police said they responded to a report of a deceased person at a home on the same block where Miller is listed as a resident.

The case is now with the coroner’s office.

MILLER’S RELATIONSHIP WITH GRANDE

Miller had reportedly been struggling for years, even before he and Grande broke up earlier this year.

He and Grande were last seen together at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival back in April.

The couple were in a relationship for two years.

In May, he was arrested after crashing his Mercedes-Benz G-Class car in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, with his blood alcohol level almost twice the legal limit.

He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence last month.

The rapper broke his silence about the incident, which happened a week after news broke that Miller and Grande had broken up.

In a conversation with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 on Apple Music in July, Miller told fans: “I made a stupid mistake. I’m a human being. But it was the best thing that could have happened. Best thing that could have happened. I needed that. I needed to run into that light pole and literally have the whole thing stop.”

Shortly after his car accident and arrest, Grande had tweeted: “pls take care of yourself.”

At the time, he said he was okay.

“I have people that care about me and fans that love my music and it’s a beautiful relationship with them — people who have been with me through being a 19-year-old wide-eyed kid to being a self-destructive depressed drug user to making love music to all these different stages. Then they see something like that and they worry,” he said.

“So your first reaction is, ‘Let me tell them I’m cool.’”

Shortly after news of their split when public, Grande called the relationship “toxic” while defending herself against fans who accused her and now-fiance, Saturday Night Live co-host and comedian Pete Davidson of being the source of Miller’s downward spiral.

Grande and Davidson are now engaged.

“How absurd that you minimise female self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship because he wrote an album about them, which btw isn’t the case (just Cinderella is ab me),” she wrote in a note posted to Twitter.

Grande indicated that addiction was part of the reason behind their break-up.

“I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be. I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety and prayed for his balance for years (and always will of course), but shaming/blaming women for a man’s inability to keep his shit together is a very major problem,” she tweeted.

Miller also revealed his thoughts about Grande’s new engagement to Davidson to Zane Lowe on Beats 1 on Apple Music.

He was “happy”, but said it was “a little strange”.

“It’s strange. Like, the whole thing is a little strange but it’s not negative. It’s just a part of something that’s going to continue to help make me who I am,” Miller told Lowe.

“I am happy for her and moving forward with her life just as I’m sure she is with me,” he said.

He said he wasn’t prepared for the speculation after his “stressful” relationship with Grande. “Life is stressful. So, of course there were stressful times. It’s not that unique,” he told radio host Zane Lowe. “I was in love with somebody. We were together for two years.”

Although they “worked through good times, bad times, stress, and everything else,” he added.

“It came to an end and we both moved on. And it’s that simple, you know.”

MILLER’S FAME AND ITS REALITY

Miller had been set to go on tour starting next month from October 27 in San Francisco.

In the last 24 hours he had only tweeted: “I just wanna go on tour”, before his reported death.

The rapper’s latest album titled Swimming, was released on August 3.

In an interview published by Vulture just days ago, Miller revealed how the pressure of being in the public eye affected him.

He told Vulture: “There’s pressure. A lot of times in my life I’ve put this pressure to hold myself to the standard of whatever I thought I was supposed to be, or how I was supposed to be perceived. And that creates pressure … It’s annoying to be out and have someone come up to me and think they know. They’re like “Yo, man, are you okay?” I’m like “Yeah, I’m fucking at the grocery store.” You know? It’s the job. This is what I signed up for. So, you just have to not. You have to have your own reality and that has to be the driving force of your life. Do I wish that every single thing I did when I was 19 wasn’t a discussion? Sure.”

When asked about his public image and how it may differ from who he really is out of the spotlight, Miller said: “I feel like the public perception of me varies on who you ask. But there’s a bit of a freedom in knowing that people are going to
think all types of shit, no matter what. It actually makes me less stressed about how my actions are perceived. It’s out of my control. I mean, to a degree … I could control it. I could live this squeaky clean life and everything. I could try to control the media. But I’ve been finding freedom in just living and letting people say whatever the f**k they want. Like, do I really care what Hollywood Life is saying? If I read a headline, and I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s completely untrue …’ I’m like, ‘That’s as far as it goes. Okay, cool. So a bunch of kids now think that.’ Fine. As long as I have people that are hearing my music, and there’s still that relationship … all that [other] shit lasts a day.”
