    Rihanna’s weird VMAs opener: ‘Why isn’t she singing?’

    IT had all the ingredients for an amazing MTV VMAs opener: Pop superstar Rihanna performing a medley of some of her biggest hits to date.

    Within seconds of the Barbardos-born songstress appearing on stage, it was apparent she was more interested in dancing along to her hits than, y’know, singing them.

    It was certainly an energetic performance, as Ri-Ri and her posse of backup dancers busted a move to some of her most high-octane hits, including Don’t Stop The Musicand Where Have You Been.

    Viewers were left frustrated, though, as Rihanna left whole lines of songs to a prerecorded backing track, sometimes putting the microphone away from her mouth mid-sentence and leaving the backing track to play out.

    It was an odd mix - half singing, half lip-syncing, fully perplexing for those watching at home. Rihanna will perform three more times tonight - let’s see if those performances include a bit more singing.
