A 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old baby girl died after a boat capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday night, police said.
The incident happened near Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty.
Police dive and aviation units were sent to the scene after a 911 caller reported the capsizing at about 10:25 p.m. Saturday, the NYPD said.
Twelve people were rescued, and divers later located the woman and the infant in the water, police said. Both were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police have not confirmed whether they are related.
Investigators are en route to interview the vessel’s captain as they continue to investigate what caused the boat to capsize, the US Coast Guard said.
No arrests have been made, according to the NYPD.
